Harsh remark against feminist protesters

Brigitte Macron has sparked a major public debate after a behind-the-scenes video surfaced in which she referred to feminist demonstrators as “dirty sluts.” The remark triggered widespread outrage, raising questions about language, power and responsibility in public office.

The footage was captured backstage at a Paris theater after a show by French comedian Ary Abittan. In conversation with him, Macron used the expression in response to previous protests by feminist activists outside the venue.

Sources from her inner circle claim she merely wanted to express her rejection of the activists’ methods rather than attack feminism itself. Yet the harsh choice of words has left many uncomfortable.

Prominent political figures—among them former president François Hollande—condemned the statement. Critics argue that such language is unacceptable even when condemning disruptive protests.

Feminist groups and activists view the remark as deliberate and degrading. Some have responded by using the insult ironically as a form of resistance, spreading hashtags such as #salesconnes.

Meanwhile, conservative voices defend Macron, arguing that private remarks must be seen in context and should not be judged as if they were official public statements.

The incident demonstrates how powerful language becomes when spoken by someone in a symbolic role like France’s First Lady. It also raises deeper questions: What does such language imply for public discussions around gender equality, sexual violence and respect?

The backlash makes another point clear: activism today spreads rapidly. Hashtags, videos, statements and protest responses circulate online in real time—turning even a casual backstage comment into a national debate.
