The U.S. electric vehicle maker Tesla has lost its leading position in the German market. According to the latest data from the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt, the Model Y is no longer the most widely registered electric car in Germany. Instead, the Volkswagen ID.3 now tops the ranking.

As of January 1, 2026, around 116,000 units of the ID.3 were registered, compared to roughly 106,000 Tesla Model Y vehicles. Just a year earlier, Tesla had still held the lead. The change at the top marks a noticeable shift in the electric vehicle market.

Both models are also the first electric cars to surpass the 100,000 registration mark in Germany. At the same time, other models are close behind. The combined numbers for the Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5 were recently just below that threshold and are likely to have crossed it by now.

Volkswagen’s growing importance is not limited to individual models. At the brand level, the company has been ahead of Tesla for some time. Tesla’s previous dominance in a single model category was largely due to its more limited product range. That structural advantage is no longer sufficient to maintain the top position.

Despite the growth, the overall electric vehicle market remains significantly smaller than the conventional car fleet. Around 2.03 million electric cars are currently registered in Germany, compared to about 3.2 million Volkswagen Golf vehicles alone. While electric mobility is gaining traction, it still represents a smaller share of the total market.

The shift reflects a broader trend: while Tesla long symbolized the rise of electric mobility, established manufacturers are steadily catching up—not only in sales, but also in overall market presence. The competition is moving from a single pioneer to a more diversified market with multiple strong players.
