When it comes to innovation, few expressions are heard more often than »reinventing the wheel«. And with good reason: Whether in trade, agriculture, industry or mobility, modern life would look entirely different without the wheel. But who actually invented it?
To this day, there is no definitive answer. For many years, historians believed the wheel had originated in Sumerian civilization. More recent archaeological discoveries, however, paint a more nuanced picture. Among the oldest known examples are finds from Europe dating back to around 3500 BC. One of the best-known artefacts in this context is the so-called Ljubljana Wheel.
From the wooden wheel to a tool of progress
The earliest wheels were solid wheels. During the Bronze and Iron Ages, spoked wheels emerged and were used primarily on chariots and agricultural carts. With each stage of development, transportation and manual work became more efficient. Remarkably, the wheel also emerged independently within the Maya civilization.
The engine of economic success
The wheel also assumed major economic importance during the Middle Ages. Waterwheels and windmills harnessed mechanical energy, significantly increasing productivity in agriculture, craftsmanship and mining. Textile manufacturing likewise benefited from innovations such as the spinning wheel and the treadle loom, both of which accelerated production processes.
During the Industrial Revolution, the wheel became a cornerstone of the modern economy. As a key component of countless machines, it enabled steam engines to transmit power efficiently to industrial production systems.
Driving the mobility revolution
At the same time, the wheel transformed transportation. While the Romans had already moved goods across their extensive road network, a decisive step toward personal mobility came with Karl von Drais. His two-wheeled »Draisine«, that was introduced in 1817, is regarded as the forerunner of the modern bicycle, which took on its familiar form around 1885.
Only a short time later, another German inventor made history. In 1886, Carl Benz was granted the patent for his motor car, marking the birth of the modern automobile.
An invention that created wealth for many
The question, who invented the wheel first will most likely remain unanswered. What is clear, however, is that the wheel has been continuously adapted throughout history to meet new challenges and requirements. As its applications expanded across countless areas, it evolved from a simple wooden construction into a highly sophisticated piece of technology.
Today, wheels have given rise to a multi-billion-dollar industry encompassing rims, tyres, ball bearings, and braking systems. One major milestone was achieved by the veterinarian John Boyd Dunlop, who is regarded as the father of the pneumatic tyre. The commercial breakthrough, however, was driven primarily by others – notably the Michelin brothers, founders of the company that bears their name, who industrialised tyre production and marketed their products worldwide.
An innovation that changed history
Few innovations have had a more lasting impact on humanity. The invention of the wheel not only enabled trade over long distances but also increased productivity and laid the foundation for modern mobility. Entire industries have grown around it – from mechanical engineering and the automotive sector to logistics.
