Study reveals post-hype disillusionment

Study reveals, working with AI is much less efficient than assumed.

The widely anticipated productivity revolution through generative AI is failing to materialize, according to a new study. A survey by the job platform Indeed found that around three-quarters of all employed people quantify their time savings through the use of tools like ChatGPT at less than three hours per week. Only eight percent of respondents gain more than six hours. "The mere availability of AI tools does not automatically lead to the expected productivity increases," Frank Hensgens, Managing Director of Indeed Germany, is quoted on Capital's online platform.

The study clearly shows that the actual benefit of the technology heavily depends on corporate culture. Accordingly, time savings are higher the more openly employees exchange ideas about the new technology. However, this is precisely where the main problem lies: the necessary knowledge transfer often fails. The 501 study participants cited a lack of time (31.5 percent) as the main reason for their reluctance. Tactical motives are also significant: one-fifth of respondents each stated that they did not want to lose their knowledge advantage or feared being rewarded for the efficiency gains achieved with additional tasks.

These communication barriers are further reinforced by a often deficient AI culture within companies. In almost two-thirds of companies, exchange about AI is not actively promoted, and in just over eleven percent, management is even critical of the technology. At the same time, the study shows that the time gained is often not used in the way companies intend. Only about half of the respondents invest it in creative or productive activities.
