Micron Technology Inc. (MU) is preparing to invest around 1.5 trillion yen—approximately $9.6 billion—to construct a new semiconductor facility in western Japan, according to a report by the Nikkei. The plant will be dedicated to producing next-generation memory chips tailored for artificial intelligence technologies.

The investment reflects Micron’s broader push to reduce its reliance on Taiwan, traditionally the backbone of global semiconductor production. Establishing a major site in Japan is intended to bolster the company’s supply-chain stability while positioning it to serve the rapidly expanding demand for AI-optimized hardware.

At the core of the project is the production of high-bandwidth memory (HBM), a critical component for AI processors, including those made by Nvidia Corp. These advanced chips are expected to be central to boosting computing performance and supporting increasingly complex AI workloads.
