According to Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, the expanded use of artificial intelligence (AI) is set to fundamentally reshape the workforce at the e-commerce giant. In an internal memo, Jassy stated that the company will require significantly fewer employees for traditional office tasks in the future. »Many tasks currently performed by humans will eventually be handled by AI systems«, the Amazon CEO explained.

The focus lies on so-called AI agents, which can independently manage complex tasks such as text analysis, translations, and even software development. However, Amazon emphasizes that this shift will not lead to mass layoffs. Instead, the company plans to simply leave vacated positions unfilled as they become available.

This development isn’t unique to Amazon – other tech firms like Spotify and Duolingo have announced similar plans to reduce headcount in certain areas through AI solutions. Experts view this as the beginning of a fundamental transformation of the workplace, particularly affecting administrative and cognitively demanding office jobs.

Amazon clarified that the transition will be implemented gradually, with affected employees being reassigned internally where possible. At the same time, the company intends to invest in new job categories emerging from technological advancements. »AI won’t just replace jobs – it will fundamentally change how we work«, the internal statement noted.
